Discontinuation of DOHNS Part 1 examination after 2021

10 Dec 2020

ICBSE and the four Surgical Royal Colleges of the United Kingdom and in Ireland wish to inform candidates that the DO-HNS Part 1 (MCQ) examination will be discontinued from 2022. As such, there will be three more sittings of the exam in 2021 for candidates wishing to take the exam. These exams will take place on the dates below:

  • Monday 11 January 2021
  • Monday 19 April 2021
  • Monday 13 September 2021

From 2022, candidates will no longer be able to attain the Diploma in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Instead, they will need to follow the requirements for the MRCS (ENT) by passing the MRCS Part A (MCQ) and the DO-HNS Part 2 (OSCE) as per section 2.2 of the Intercollegiate MRCS (ENT) regulations.

Candidates who already hold a pass at DO-HNS Part 1 or who pass the DO-HNS Part 1 before it is discontinued will still be able to attain the Diploma in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery if they pass the DO-HNS Part 2 (OSCE) within seven years of passing the DO-HNS Part 1, as per section 4.1 of the Intercollegiate DO-HNS regulations.
